June 9th is the beginning of a string of important days in my history. I can still remember the anticipation as we drove to the hospital to get checked in and all the twists and turns that followed the next couple days in 2013. I can also remember how I started driver’s ed on this day in 1997. Both days were filled with the fear and happiness of uncertainties and no longer of what was just around the corner
In an era where albums are unimportant and merely song collections or playlist, Kendrick Lamar has created yet another masterpiece that pushes hip hop forward into the future. I’ve always loved a great cohesive album, but I don’t think hip hop overall has very many great ones. Even though this album is a little over two weeks old, it is easily in my top five all time hip hop albums (behind Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool, Genius’ Liquid Swords, Raekwon’ Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and Outkast’s Speakerboxx/The Love Below). “DAMN.” is a truly amazing project
I had a conversation with one of my students about our upcoming finals and he told me that he might skip a couple of them because “they don’t matter.” I tried to explain to him that in academics, every grade matters especially since his intentions are to attend college. You have to run through the tape, not just to the tape
I was talking to a couple of my high school students and somehow we got on the subject of covered wagons. I brought my favorite game to play in elementary school, good ole Oregon Trail! That was met with blank stares by the kids as I tried to explain the ultimate game to play at school. I will be 35 later this month but I can’t believe that I am some much older than this generation that they’ve not even heard of that wonderful game!
With yesterday (April 2nd) being Marvin Gaye’s birthday, I sat and thought about my favorite songs and albums of his. “What’s Goin On” is my favorite album of his with “I Want You” and “Midnight Love”tied for second. My all time favorite song of his however is “You Sure Love To Ball” from the album Lets Get It On.
